Newly to Falmouth #2

Newlyn to Falmouth. Learning how to Sail again part 2 or I pushed the wrong button!
Saturday May 11 2019.
0600. I’m up doing the usual getting the tea kettle on checking the weather and stuff. The kettle whissssssssstles steam rises, Sally gets up and by 0700 we’re underway on a clear bright morning with flat seas.
0950 We do what we havn’t done since last year! Nope not that or whatever else you might be thinking! We shut the engine off!! Whooooopie Sailing just plain old no engine sailing What a change! Just the sound of the sea gurgling by and the noise of the wind. Perfect just perfect.
We managed to sail all the way to Falmouth 40 miles in 4 and a bit hours.
We got a pontoon at the Falmouth Marina and spent 6 days there doing the touristy stuff checking out the sights took the train back to Penzance to see the pirates but there wer’nt any not even a pretend or stuffed one! Nice town though interesting architecture and stuff. I also replaced the bow navigation light as the old one had corroded into uselessness.
A fine sail no hassles no break downs. Just a perfect trip.
We entered the harbour and found a space on the visitors pontoon at the Town marina.

We spent six days in and around Falmouth. One afternoon at the marine museum where in the basement you can look out on the underwater scene in the harbour! There were also 2 very large over 100 footers being outfitted at the boatyard. We couldn’t get close enough to really see them but they were big. The booms were longer than Kalinka 1 and probably worth more! We also took the train back to Penzance as we wanted to see the pirates but no such luck. Also took the bus out to Newly to purchase a replacement bow light as the old one had self destructed from corrosion(chinese made). When we were in Ireland in Waterford I had checked all the Nav lights Mashead and deck everything worked. When I checked again at the boatyard the masthead wasn’t working! The day before we left Sean using the cherry picker checked out the light and changed the bulb no luck so a bad connection somewhere. The bow light was working so we left figuring we would get the mast head working on the way(no joy). We left Waterford for the crossing to the Scilly’s and of course at sunset when I turned on the lights nada, nothing, zip, no bow light! (&%$#_@#$!) Bahhh, Beegeebbbuss. Etc etc. So we continued with the steaming and stern light alone good thing for ais as it told anyone interested what our course was. Up to this point we had not seen another boat, As soon as we realized we were short a couple of lights there were other boats all over the place! Stress levels went up!
We bought a replacement in Newly returned to Falmouth where I replaced the light. Of course the new one was slightly different from the old so nothing fit the same! Sally went to do laundry or something. Maybe it was learning a new language? So got the light mounted. Didn’t work! So took it off and tested it below and it worked! Ha I figured a bad connection somewhere. I cut the wire at the next connections corroded changed still doesn’t work! Grrrrr! Went to the next. grrrrrrrrrrrrr@#$% and the next GGGGGRRRRRRRRRRR!@#@$%^%$. So then I went under the v berth rummaged around and couldn’t find enough wire to change it all Grrrrrr to the 10th. Off to a chandlery bought a bunch of wire then spent a large portion of the day fishing the new wires into the pulpit. I guess I forgot to mention that all the wires were inside the pulpit tubes! Any how eventually got it all done and????????????????????????
It worked. Now of course since all that we haven’t sailed at night and haven’t needed lights!

Newlyn to Falmouth

Newlyn to Falmouth. Learning how to Sail again.
So just a quick one as apparently the pictures didn't show up on the last one I'll try again but with this added.

One of the foot prints should be upside down for when Sir Robert Knox Johnson left and when he returned to Falmouth after the around the world race. We actually saw him sailing out of Gosport on Suailhy later.

The Cruise of 2019 Begins.

                          The Cruise of 2019 begins.

April 22 2019. 1500.
We cast off our lines from Waterford Marina and headed down the Sur River with the end of the ebb tide. We motored to the confluence with the Barrow River and then made a 90 degree turn to port and motored under the Barrow railway bridge and made our way up the Barrow with the beginning of the flood tide to the New Ross Boatyard where we hauled out on April 30/19. To paint the bottom and renew the propeller and shaft zincs and generally get Kalinka 1 for the season.
We moved ashore to John and Carol’s while they were away on a vacation.
Friday May 3 2019 1700. Launched.
Then we partied with Michael and Stephen.
Sat. May2019 0945 we cast off and headed back down the Barrow and back to Waterford to finish storing the boat and to recover.
Sunday May 5 2019 0815 Finally we are underway on a quiet morning . At 1000 we raised the Main sail and motored down the river and out into the Celtic Sea.
Set course for New Grimsby in the Isles of Scilly. An easy motor sailing trip but it was cold. A pod of dolphins arrived around dinner time so we were entertained while we ate. Sally went off watch and it was my turn to sit and watch the sea rolling along . It got dark but not scary and at 0001 Mon.,May 6/19 Sally came back on watch and I went for a snooz. Not much happened because it was any easy trip. We arrived at New Grimsby on the Isle of Tresco and picked up a mooring  at 0800.
Tuesday May 7/19 at 0700 We left Tresco and moved around to Hughestown on St. Mary’s Island where we spent a couple of days and took the ferry over to St. Martin’s to visit with Lizzie’s brother. We then moved back to New Grimsby and then left on Friday May 10/19  at 0735 for Newlyn on the mainland. It was a bright sunny day No wind so another MB ride (should have bought a Trawler) any how Sally was doing what Sally does second best leaving me all alone on deck when I was startled by something dark and low down in the water! A submarine? Hoped not cause that could mean getting lifted out of the water or a periscope through the bottom (the boats bottom not mine though thinking about it. It could be mine to) A dolphin? Could have been but wasn’t. What’s left? The readers ask? I’m about to tell you.
It was a small(relatively speaking) Minky whale just ambling along without a care in the world and certainly not concerned about us being around. Of course there was no time to take a picture so we both went our separate ways.
We arrived at Newlyn at 1315 and then I spent the rest of the day clearing the limber holes because the forward bilges were full of water! Not a good thing as you can imagine as water should stay on the outside! Not a pleasant job.Think Sally learned some new words and phrases? Eventually got them all cleared of something I don’t have and then went off for a well deserved shower .

The Tour

                                                                      THE TOUR.
                                                               In a Paddy Wagon!
Not the one some of you probably had a ride and the one I drove in Toronto when I was on the list.
It started when Ted (up North) & Marie and John and Susan arrived in Dublin. I took the bus up to meet them all and have a night out in the Big city. I managed to meet T&M  and had a walk about after I had checked into the same Hotel. Turned out to be a very high priced dump! After a couple of false starts we managed to meet up on Connell street. Sally joined us later. After a miserable night of not much sleep we walked over to the Paddy Hostel where we met John and Susan and 5 others who were on the tour with us and our driver Sean. We got underway for our 1st stop at Glendalough an Old Monastic site in the Wicklow mountains We spent a couple of hours there and Sally and I managed to get a Geo Cache. Then off over Sally’s road, over the mountains to Kilkenny where the others did a tour of the Castle and Sally and I went for a nice lunch. The day ended with us all in Waterford. The rest stayed in a nice Hotel we opted for a quiet night on the boat.
Haa the quiet night wasn’t T and J showed up sans wives. With 2 BIG bottles of Captain Morgan Dark!
3 of us managed to get through it all especially when one who shall remain nameless not I tossed the cap over the side! Sally finally got up at 0500 to chase the others home. (praise the lord) Problem though everyone except Sally is legless! And the pontoon moves, up and down, back and forth and side to side in no particular order. There were a lot of murmers hail mary’s  some other promises to the dieties of choice stumbles and hanging ons. We all managed the trek without getting wet. Then. We got to the Hotel.
We were met at the door by a rather large security person who said in a Polish accented Irish voice. “No way HOSay, Your not coming in here. Ooops hadn’t thought of that. What to do now No Way are they coming back to the boat! Sally to the rescue (Not that she was pleased with the whole situation). “It’s OK they have rooms here and their wives are inside worried about them (the last part is an untruth) They got in.
Sally helped me back to the boat.
2 !/2 hours later I was rudely awaken to.” Get your sorry butt up and out I’m going to church and your doing a tour of Waterford Crystal then we’re catching the tour bus” I jumped for joy. Managed a cup of tea and a shave (good thing for safety razors). Then walked to the tour Sally met John They went off to Church and I did the tour with Susan and Marie. I wasn’t blamed for what their respective husbands did. Ted was nowhere to be found.
The bus arrived we loaded our bags Teddy showed up and off we went .
The rest of the tour went off without a hitch until the last day. We had made arrangements to change the first nights’ accommodation in Waterford to the last night in Dublin in what we thought would be comparable rooms.
We arrived back in Dublin to the Paddy Hotel to be told nope no private rooms we don’t have any! But you can have a room on the top floor with an onsuite. We trudged up 4 flights of rickety narrow steps to be shown a room with 4 bunk beds with no place to sit Someways worse than the first night. We said nope not good enough should be like for like not a room you charge !5 euro for that we paid 80. Doesn’t matter. Eventually we never got our money back. We managed to get a very nice room next door in a nice hotel. Sally and I had a nice dinner a good nights sleep and flew back to Canada on April 1.
