The Cruise of 2019
begins.
April
22 2019. 1500.
We
cast off our lines from Waterford Marina and headed down the Sur River with the
end of the ebb tide. We motored to the confluence with the Barrow River and
then made a 90 degree turn to port and motored under the Barrow railway bridge
and made our way up the Barrow with the beginning of the flood tide to the New
Ross Boatyard where we hauled out on April 30/19. To paint the bottom and renew
the propeller and shaft zincs and generally get Kalinka 1 for the season.
We
moved ashore to John and Carol’s while they were away on a vacation.
Friday
May 3 2019 1700. Launched.
Then
we partied with Michael and Stephen.
Sat.
May2019 0945 we cast off and headed back down the Barrow and back to Waterford
to finish storing the boat and to recover.
Sunday
May 5 2019 0815 Finally we are underway on a quiet morning . At 1000 we raised
the Main sail and motored down the river and out into the Celtic Sea.
Set course for New Grimsby in the Isles of
Scilly. An easy motor sailing trip but it was cold. A pod of dolphins arrived
around dinner time so we were entertained while we ate. Sally went off watch
and it was my turn to sit and watch the sea rolling along . It got dark but not
scary and at 0001 Mon.,May 6/19 Sally came back on watch and I went for a
snooz. Not much happened because it was any easy trip. We arrived at New
Grimsby on the Isle of Tresco and picked up a mooring at 0800.
Tuesday
May 7/19 at 0700 We left Tresco and moved around to Hughestown on St. Mary’s
Island where we spent a couple of days and took the ferry over to St. Martin’s
to visit with Lizzie’s brother. We then moved back to New Grimsby and then left
on Friday May 10/19 at 0735 for Newlyn
on the mainland. It was a bright sunny day No wind so another MB ride (should
have bought a Trawler) any how Sally was doing what Sally does second best
leaving me all alone on deck when I was startled by something dark and low down
in the water! A submarine? Hoped not cause that could mean getting lifted out
of the water or a periscope through the bottom (the boats bottom not mine
though thinking about it. It could be mine to) A dolphin? Could have been but
wasn’t. What’s left? The readers ask? I’m about to tell you.
It
was a small(relatively speaking) Minky whale just ambling along without a care
in the world and certainly not concerned about us being around. Of course there
was no time to take a picture so we both went our separate ways.
We
arrived at Newlyn at 1315 and then I spent the rest of the day clearing the
limber holes because the forward bilges were full of water! Not a good thing as
you can imagine as water should stay on the outside! Not a pleasant job.Think
Sally learned some new words and phrases? Eventually got them all cleared of
something I don’t have and then went off for a well deserved shower .
